Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias
It's been 5 years now that the Federal Government set new standards for school meals. The BCS cafeterias are meeting these new standards, ensuring that the meals we serve are healthy and well-balanced as never before, to provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Continue to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion sizes.
Additional standards include:
* Age-appropriate calorie limits for lunch:
K-5 - 550-650; 6-8 - 600-700; 9-12 - 750-850
*Larger servings of fruit and vegetables (students must take one serving of produce)
*A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.
3 3/4 cup weekly for K-8 and 5 c. weekly for 9-12
1/2 c. from dark green veggies (broccoli, romaine lettuce, spinach)
3/4 c. from red and orange veggies for K-8 grades and 1 1/4 c. for 9-12 grades (carrots, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, red bell peppers)
2 cups other veggies for K-8 and 2 3/4 for 9-12 (potatoes, celery, green bell peppers, cauliflower, corn, green beans, peas)
1/2 cup beans, legumes for all grade levels weekly.
Fruit: K-8 grades - 1/2 cup daily and 9-12 grades - 1 cup daily
Fluid Milk: *Fat-free Chocolate or 1% White
Whole Grains: *More whole grains - 51% whole grain rich.
*K-5 grade - 8-10 oz. a week, 6-8 grade - 9-10 oz. a week & 9-12 grade - 10-11 oz. a week.
Less than 30% of total calories for FAT
Less than 10% of total calories from Saturated FAT
Less sodium *even less sodium for school year 15/16'
